The works in this suite of small panels were
executed in thick oil paint applied with a painting knife. The use of direct mark making and the building up of successive layers recalls the work of the Parisian tachist painters in
the 1950's. There is often a landscape reference in these
works and a tendency towards blurring
the borders of realism and abstraction, as in the work of Nicholas de Stael,
an artist who was an influence on this series. |
